Four seasons and one night at the edge of the Belgrade Forest
An owl no bigger than a sparrow. On summer nights it gives itself away with a soft, single-note whistle repeated every few seconds; hearing it is far easier than seeing it. The sound is deceptive, too: a whistle a hundred metres off can seem to come from the branch beside you. Its bark-patterned plumage makes it almost invisible on a daytime perch. It arrives in April and leaves for Africa in September, so the whistle belongs to summer nights alone.
